That does not mean every homeowner should disconnect a radiator themselves. If the radiator needs to be drained, valves altered or pipework moved, use a competent plumber where appropriate. The heating system should be dealt with safely and in accordance with the radiator and system manufacturer's instructions.
There are projects where a radiator remains in position and the brick slips are fitted around it. That can be workable when the visible wall is the only area being changed, but it creates a different design: the cladding effectively stops behind the radiator rather than forming a properly finished field across the whole wall.

A common mistake is to mark the old bracket locations, fit the brick effect tiles, then discover that the radiator no longer sits where expected because the face of the wall has moved forwards.

Plan radiator pipework as part of the brick bond

Where possible, aim for pipe penetrations that can be cut cleanly and finished neatly. Do not move heating pipework purely to make the brick pattern more convenient unless that change has been assessed and carried out appropriately.
Pipes that rise from the floor
When radiator pipes rise vertically from the floor, the brick slips may not need to be pierced at all if the pipes sit in front of the finished wall. The key consideration becomes the relationship between the skirting, bottom course, valves and new wall thickness.
Check that the brick cladding will not crowd the back of the valve or make future access unnecessarily difficult. A neat wall is valuable, but serviceability matters too.
Pipes that emerge through the wall
Wall-fed pipes normally require a more deliberate cut. Measure the pipe location from fixed datum points rather than from a loose slip held against the wall. Mark the actual slip only after the course position has been confirmed.
A suitable finishing collar or escutcheon can sometimes make the junction cleaner, provided it is compatible with the pipe and installation. Avoid rigidly packing material around pipework in a way that interferes with the plumbing detail or makes future work difficult.
How to cut brick tiles neatly around radiator pipes
The best cut depends on where the pipe lands within the bond. Sometimes a pipe can be accommodated with a carefully shaped edge cut; in other layouts, a drilled or otherwise formed opening may be appropriate. The important point is that the cut is measured from the laid-out course, not guessed from the radiator position.

Do not force a slip into position against a pipe simply because the cut is slightly tight. If the opening is wrong, remake the piece. One accurately cut brick tile is far less noticeable than a damaged face, chipped edge or distorted pipe.
Set out the courses before the radiator goes back on the wall
Behind a radiator, the easiest temptation is to think that no one will see the brickwork. That is rarely true. The top edge, sides and spaces between radiator panels can reveal enough of the wall to expose poor alignment.
Continue the same bond behind the radiator as you use across the visible wall. Keep joint widths consistent and avoid creating a separate patch of brickwork simply because the centre section will be partly obscured.
This also makes future changes easier. If the radiator is replaced with a narrower model in several years' time, a continuous brick pattern will still make sense. A hurried patch hidden behind today's radiator may become tomorrow's most visible defect.
Choose brick slips that work with the rest of the room
