Brick Slips - Information

What Are Brick Slips?

Brick Slips, otherwise know as brick tiles, brick veneers or slip bricks can either be casted specifically for a brick slip or in some case a thin section of a facing bricks. Brick slip cladding is used to give the appearance of either a modern or traditional exposed brick wall finish both internally and externally. Traditionally used by architects to give new buildings a brick finish without the weight, labour and expense of using traditional bricks.

Fast forward a decade and brick slips are being used by home owners to create their own traditional brick slip wall.Ourselves we focus on purpose made brick slips rather then brick slip facings, we do this because with facings there is a lack of consistency from one month to the next the hues, shadings etc will change.

With a pre-casted brick slip this finish is replicated time and time again.Brick Slips vs Facing Brick SlipsCut brick and Brick slips might look similar in the essence they are both a thin slice of what appears to be brick but there make up is vastly different.

Cut brick is traditionally a full brick that has had the facing slices of to give a small thin brick veneer, Typically these are around 15mm in thickness and measure 200mm x 58mm. Like our brick slips they are singular and installed one by one

With our Brick Slips, these are pre-casted using materials including pigment, cement and pumice. This allows us to cast a thinner brick slip (just 15mm thick) and lighter brick slip (up to 30% lighter then brick facings) in addition to these savings, there is also a cost saving element and a quality element. The quality of a pre-casted brick slip outweighs that of a Facing brick.

Can Brick Slips Be Use For A Fireplace?

Yes! all of our fireplace brick slips are fire rated A this means they are non-combustible and suitable for electric, gas and open fires including surround that lovely new log burner you own. Using Fireplace Brick Slips To Decorate Your Fireplace Wether it is a simple log burner back drop or a full chimney breast re-make you can be sure that we will have the brick slip for you, from our Cottage Blend Brick Slip to a traditional Farmhouse brick slip we have plenty of variety. our products are designed to help your fireplace back to its glory days!

Having a traditional fireplace might mean that you want to keep that traditional feel which is where red brick slips can really make a difference. Using brick slips that have that old-fashioned look, you can make a huge statement and make your fireplace an integral part of the room.

Traditional Or Modern Brick Slips There are two ways to go here, you can keep your brick slips traditional by using red or weathered brick slips like the Docklands brick slips or you can opt for a modern finish by using a more neutral colour such as our Shadow Grey Brick Slips.

We always advise getting a few samples first to help you make the best decision. Things To Consider When using Fireplace Brick Slips With A Fireplace When using brick slips with your fireplace it is important to consider the materials. ensure you use a heat resistant adhesive, backing board and mortar. These can be brought online and are very important when installing brick slips to ensure a secure fixing.

What Makes a Brick Slip Feature Wall Great?

When it comes to making a dramatic statement, nothing turns heads more than exposed brick slips and that is why it is becoming an increasingly popular choice when it comes to feature walls.

Whether you’re looking for that raw look, a stylish pop of colour or a traditional vibe, a brick feature wall can add character, history and even a contemporary feel.

With more colours and styles becoming available as well as textures, anyone with the desire to let their interior design creativity flow will see exactly why brick slips are becoming a great choice. Whether it’s the office or the home, this is a trend that is gathering pace but what makes a brick slip feature wall so great?

With a huge range of styles to pick from, you might feel as though there is too much but we think having plenty of choice is a good thing! Therefore, we have created a guide to help you design the perfect feature brick slips in your home.

Should it Stand Out or Blend In?Regardless of the type or style of brick slip that you choose, a brick feature wall is undoubtedly bold and is going to have a significant impact on how your room will feel. An example of this is brick slips that are heavily textured as they will add a rustic feel that is aged, giving a more relaxed and cosy vibe. If you opt for a brick slip that is smoother and sharper with less texture, then that will create a more energetic feel.

Of course, you have the colour to explore too. This can include red, yellow, white, grey and black as well as the mortar that is used between each brick slip.

Every choice you make has an impact on the way in which your feature wall blends in or stands out. What’s more, many people choose to match their brick slips in with the exterior brick work, so that is something you might want to consider. Therefore, this ensures that you can keep the look relatively uniform while giving your entire property plenty of character. Despite this, you shouldn’t feel held back by this because many people also choose to use different colour bricks. This level of creativity is great for those who like to mix things up and do things differently.

Modern or Traditional? Our Cottage Blend brick slips are designed to create a traditional look but it is a popular choice when it comes to feature walls. It has a reclaimed look that’s rustic and that means that each brick delivers a unique look and feel, as well as an abundance of charm. It looks great when it is paired up with wooden worktops or copper fittings in a bathroom. If you want a modern look and feel then you might want to choose the White brick slips. They create a striking look that gives off a certain energy and vibe. They can transform dark spaces and give kitchens and bathrooms a lease of life. Essentially, it will become an integral part of your home in no time at all!

Your Mortar Joints Finishing off your brick slips is important. The quality of the finish can be the difference between creating a feature wall that is amazing and one that is average. If you match the mortar to the brick slip, this will create an authentic and understated look. However, you can make a statement by opting to use a light grey or dark grey mortar against a lighter brick slip as this will draw out each joint, giving the eye something to focus on.

Creating a feature wall is about taking inspiration from your creativity and adding your own touch to each space. It’s easier to transform your home with brick slips than you might realise, so now is the best time to get thinking about your design ideas.

Barnhouse Blend Brick Slips

The Different Names And Uses For Our Brick Slips

Whilst we refer to our products in general as 'Brick Slips' there are many different other names given for them and also many different uses, below is lightly detailed explanation of the different terms, there meanins and how our Brick Slips have been designed for these different uses. As always you are more then welcome to contact us via live chat, phone or email!

Brick Tiles - This is probably the second most used term to describe our products, brick tiles are essentially the same as brick slips. However some companies will use the term brick tiles to describe a ceramic or porcelain product this being an actual tile that then has a brick design printed on it. However for us we like to keep things real and authentic so our brick effect tiles are exactly that! a pre-casted purpose made brick slip with no repeating patterns or colours. All of our brick tiles are handfinished, sealed and purpose made.

Brick Effect Tiles - An extension on the above, Brick Effect Tiles again can mean various things but for us it is just another way of us referring to our brick slips. All of our brick effect tiles are agin pre-casted purpose made brick effect tiles, no cermaic, clay or porcelain is used, we do not print or use impression for the design. The name is often used to describe our brick slips as the basic thought of our product is brick effect tiles. They give the perfect brick finish in both looks and feel. But let it be known our brick effect tiles are completely genuine.

Brick Veneer - Brick veneer is best describer as a thin layer of brick or brick-like material that is applied to the exterior or interior of a building to give the appearance of traditional brickwork. Still the same a sbrick slips, this term is just an additioanl term some use to describe the product and its not wrong to use it. Our Brick Vener is pre-cast this makes it a lighter, more cost-effective alternative to full brick construction and other brick veneer products. Brick veneer can be made from real clay bricks or manufactured materials designed to mimic the look and feel of natural brick (in our case this is what we do.

Red Brick Slips - Within our comprehensive collection of brick slips, they are mainly dominated by red brick slips. Red brick slips are the most traditional option for anyone seeking a tradtional brick finish in their home. within this collection we have over 10 different designs with different sizes, textures and colours. Our red brick slips include standard reds, weathered reds, rustic reds and more. Red brick slips can work in a vairety of settings such as fireplaces, feature walls, extenral home cladding and more.

Fireplace Brick Slips - Fireplace brick slips are one of the most requested items. Therefore we have ensured all of our brick slips meet fire regulations and are safe to use in the home and in commercial settings. Our fireplace brick slips are fire rsted A1 and are non-combustible which means all you need to do is provide a heat resistant adhesive and your set to use our brick slips in your fireplace. Our fireplace brick slips come in an array of colours and and sizes to suit everyones needs. If you need any fuirther help feel free to reach out to us.

External Brick Slips - Brick slips can be used internall and externally, we do not offer a seperate collection of external brick slips however, we have developed our brick slips for many years which allows them to be used as external brick slips. Made from a mixture of concrete, pumice and oxy-dye all of our external brick slips are also pre-sealed to prevent water penertration. By sealing our external brick slips it protects them from frost, stains and damp so you can be sure our brick slips will last a lifetime.

Log Burner Brick Slips - Log burner brick slips can be quite hard to find or at least hard to find ones that are suitable for extreme heat! Again with our brick slips we want to make sure that no matter your plans or desirtes our brick slips will be perfect for you! This includes using them as log burner brick slips. again they are suitable for high heat enviroments, their slim profiel allows for them fit snug behind your burner and even in some cases, our log burner brick slips can be installed once the burner is already in place.
