The important point is that a cracked joint is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Sometimes the problem is limited to a small area of mortar. In other cases, the crack is telling you that the background, fixing system or surrounding construction is moving.
That distinction matters. Simply covering a crack with a thin smear of fresh mortar may make the wall look better for a short time, but it will not correct movement, poor joint preparation or a loose stone slip. Read the crack before you reach for more mortar

If a crack continues through the wall behind the cladding, is growing, is accompanied by significant movement, or several stone slips are loose, it is sensible to have the area assessed by a competent installer or building professional. A photograph of the surface is not enough to diagnose structural movement.
Common reasons stone cladding mortar joints crack
1. Drying shrinkage in the pointing mortar
Mortar changes as it cures and dries. A mix that contains too much water, is mixed differently from batch to batch, or dries too quickly can be more prone to shrinkage. A very wet mix may feel easier to work into a joint, but adding water beyond the product instructions changes the mix and can weaken the finished result.
Rapid drying can also matter. Hot sun, strong airflow or an unusually absorbent background can draw moisture away quickly. The correct approach depends on the mortar and the complete cladding system, so follow the manufacturer’s mixing, application and curing instructions rather than compensating by adding extra water on site.
2. The joint was not filled deeply or firmly enough
Pointing should not be a decorative skin sitting only across the face of a joint. If mortar is shallow, loosely packed or applied over dust and debris, the small visible layer has less sound material behind it to support it. Local sections can then crack or break away.
When repairing an isolated joint, this is why removing loose material back to sound mortar is usually more meaningful than simply wiping new mortar across the surface.
3. Movement in the substrate
Stone slips are a finish; they do not make an unstable wall stable. Timber-based backgrounds, plasterboard systems, blockwork, boarded constructions and junctions between different materials can all behave differently as temperature and moisture conditions change.

4. A movement joint has effectively been bridged
Where the construction requires a movement joint, covering that location with rigid cladding and rigid pointing can transfer movement into the finished surface. The resulting crack may look suspiciously straight because the wall beneath is moving along a planned or natural line.
Movement-joint design is system- and construction-specific. If a joint should remain functional, it needs to be detailed in accordance with the cladding-system and building requirements rather than filled indiscriminately with ordinary pointing mortar.
5. Temperature cycling
Materials expand and contract as temperatures change, but not always by the same amount. This is especially relevant to external stone cladding, sun-facing elevations and areas close to a heat source. The mortar, adhesive, stone slips and substrate form one assembly, so compatibility matters more than the performance of any one material in isolation.
6. Moisture and exposed external details
External walls have to cope with rain, drying, temperature swings and, in cold weather, freeze-thaw conditions. Cracking can be encouraged when water repeatedly gets into vulnerable details or when the installation has not been designed for its exposure.
That does not mean every exterior hairline crack is caused by frost or water. It means the surrounding details are worth checking: tops of walls, sills, copings, openings, drainage paths and junctions can all influence how much water reaches the cladding system. This is one of the most useful checks you can make before repairing cracked mortar. Pointing fills and finishes the visible joints. The fixing layer behind the stone slips is what holds the units to the prepared background.
If the stone slips around the crack are firm, the defect may be confined to the joint. If a unit visibly rocks, shifts or has started to detach, repointing around it is not a proper repair. The fixing layer and substrate need to be checked first.

Does cracked mortar mean the stone cladding has failed?
Not automatically. A stable, isolated defect in pointing can be a local maintenance issue. The wider pattern is what changes the level of concern.
A crack deserves closer investigation when it is long, recurring, accompanied by loose stone slips, associated with visible movement in the background, or linked to moisture entering the wall. In those situations, treating only the surface risks hiding evidence that could help identify the real cause.
How to repair an isolated cracked stone cladding mortar joint
The following sequence is appropriate only when the problem appears local, the surrounding cladding is secure and there is no sign that an underlying wall defect needs attention. Always follow the instructions for the actual pointing product and cladding system being used.
1. Check that the crack is stable
Look at the joint from end to end and inspect the adjoining stone slips. If the crack appears to be changing, passes through the substrate, or sits beside loose units, investigate first rather than immediately filling it.
2. Protect the faces and edges of the stone slips
Repair work is slower and more controlled than initial pointing. Work carefully so that tools do not chip the edges of the stone slips or smear mortar unnecessarily over textured faces.
3. Remove failed mortar back to sound material
Take out loose, friable or detached material rather than leaving it in place beneath the repair. The aim is to create a sound joint that new mortar can properly fill, not a shallow groove that accepts only a cosmetic skim.
Depth and removal method will depend on the installation. Avoid aggressive cutting that could damage the cladding, the fixing bed or concealed components.
4. Clean the joint
Dust and loose particles reduce the quality of any repair. Brush or vacuum the joint carefully. Any dampening, priming or other preparation should follow the instructions for the specific pointing product and substrate; do not introduce PVA or another additive simply because it is available.
5. Mix a compatible mortar consistently
Measure water and follow the stated mixing process. If the wall was originally pointed with a known product, matching that system can simplify colour and performance consistency. Where the original material is unknown, check compatibility rather than assuming any general-purpose mortar will behave the same way.
6. Pack the joint rather than coating it
Work mortar into the prepared joint so that it is properly supported. Tool the surface at the appropriate stage to match the surrounding joint profile as closely as practical. A well-matched repair is usually less noticeable once it has cured, although fresh mortar can differ in colour while drying.
7. Let the repair cure under suitable conditions
Protect the repair according to the product instructions. On exterior work, temperature, rain, wind and direct sun can all affect when pointing should be carried out. Do not assume a dry-looking afternoon automatically provides suitable curing conditions.
Why does the same mortar crack keep coming back?
Repeated cracking in exactly the same position is a strong reason to stop treating the joint as a simple filling job. Fresh mortar may be faithfully showing the same movement every time.
Possible causes include movement in a boarded or framed background, a junction between different substrates, a construction or movement joint beneath the cladding, repeated thermal movement, a moisture-related defect or movement around an opening. The repair has to address the cause, not just the visible line.
It is also worth checking whether previous repairs were too shallow. A succession of thin surface patches can fail even when the original cause was relatively local.
Internal stone cladding and external stone cladding need different checks
With internal stone cladding, the diagnostic focus is often on substrate movement, boarded-wall construction, heat sources, openings and how the joints were originally filled. Indoor walls are not normally exposed to driving rain or frost, although moisture can still matter in kitchens, bathrooms and other demanding spaces.
External stone cladding adds weather exposure to the equation. Rainfall, drying, orientation, detailing and temperature cycles can all influence the assembly. Any repair should therefore be assessed as part of the external wall system rather than as an isolated decorative finish.

Cracked joints around fireplace and log burner stone cladding
Cracking near a fireplace or stove deserves extra care because heat adds another variable and fire-safety requirements are specific to the appliance, surround and installation.
Do not assume that filling a visible crack is enough if there is movement around fireplace stone cladding or log burner stone cladding. Check the appliance manufacturer’s required clearances, the cladding-system instructions, the condition of the non-combustible background where applicable, and the suitability of the fixing and pointing materials for that location. Frequently asked questions about cracked stone cladding joints
Can I just fill a hairline crack without removing the old mortar?
A surface-only fill may not bond well if the existing material is loose or dusty, and it will not correct an underlying movement problem. For an isolated stable defect, remove failed material back to a sound edge and follow the repair-mortar instructions rather than simply wiping mortar over the line.
Why does my mortar crack keep returning in the same place?
Recurring cracks often suggest that the source of movement has not been dealt with, although a shallow or poorly bonded previous repair can also fail again. Check the substrate, openings, material junctions and any movement-joint requirements before repointing yet again.
Can I use flexible sealant instead of mortar in a cracked joint?
